Art for the office
What Size Painting Should I Hang in My Office?
By Zhanna Mezhenska · October 7, 2026
This is the question I hear most often - and the one people get wrong most often. A beautiful painting in the wrong size looks like a postage stamp or swallows the whole wall.
Here are the rules professionals use:
Match the furniture. If the painting hangs above a desk, credenza, or sofa, it should be 60 to 90 percent of that furniture's width. A 72-inch desk wants art roughly 43 to 65 inches wide.
Hang at eye level. The center of the painting should sit about 57 to 60 inches from the floor - gallery standard. In an office where people mostly sit, you can go slightly lower.
Mind the viewing distance. Big bold abstracts can be read from across the room. Detailed work needs to be closer - hang it where people will actually stand near it, like a hallway or reception nook.
One strong piece beats five small ones. A single confident painting gives a room a center and a mood. A scattered cluster of small frames often just looks busy - the opposite of what a workspace needs.
And one more thing most guides skip: size carries energy. A tiny painting on a huge empty wall can make a room feel uncertain. A generous piece says the business behind it is confident. Your walls talk to every client who walks in - make sure they say the right thing.
