Can Art at Work Really Reduce Stress? What Research Says
By Zhanna Mezhenska · October 7, 2026
It sounds too simple: hang a painting, feel better. But researchers have been testing this for years, and the results are hard to ignore.
The British Council for Offices found that 61% of workers say artwork makes their workplace more welcoming, and 50% say it directly improves their productivity. A well-known study from the University of Exeter showed that people working in spaces enriched with art and plants were 17% more productive than those in bare, minimal offices - and when people arranged the art themselves, productivity rose by around 30%.
A survey by the Business Committee for the Arts found that 78% of workers agree art in the workplace reduces stress, 64% say it boosts creativity, and 77% feel it encourages people to express their opinions more freely. Research referenced by the World Health Organization links engagement with visual art to lower anxiety and better mood regulation.
Why does it work? Scientists point to a few things: beautiful images trigger dopamine, the brain's pleasure chemical. Nature scenes and calming colors slow a racing mind. And a space with art simply feels more human - which matters when you spend eight hours a day in it.
So yes - what hangs on your office walls is not decoration. It is part of the work environment, as real as lighting or air quality. Choose it like it matters, because it does.
